The U.S. Department of Justice, Civil Rights Division, will lead an investigation into the conduct and service of Newark’s police force. The announcement today comes after the ACLU-Newark filed a petition with the Justice Department in September. In it, the ACLU documented 418 allegations of routine civil rights violations reported by citizens in a two-and-a-half year period, including false arrests, inconsistent discipline of officers, discrimination and, acts of violence against citizens, some of which resulted in injury and death. Federal officials say they have already done a preliminary review of allegations and now want a comprehensive investigation. Newark’s Mayor says he welcomes the probe. However, the ACLU says Mayor Booker has consistently resisted their effort to bring federal investigators to the city.
