For more than an hour, Carl Lewis testified before an administrative law judge today regarding his New Jersey residency. The Burlington County Republican Committee and Hainesport GOP have challenged the nine-time Olympic gold medalist’s right to run for state senate because they say he hasn’t lived inNew Jersey for the past four years.

It seems to me there is a general assault on the restrictions traditionally placed upon candidates who would run for office within this Republic. These restrictions were placed to help ensure the capability, familiarity, and allegiance of office holders. I believe that Carl Lewis is joining a trend to distance the legalities of eligibility from the realities of common sense and morality. Rahm Emmanuel recently succeeded in becoming mayor of Chicago even though everyone knows he was very busy in D.C. for 2+ years, and President Obama is likely withholding his detailed birth certificate in order to force a hearing before SCOTUS which he believes would rule on his behalf.
