Retirement Exodus By Public Employees

By Zachary Fink

Union delegates for the State Policemen’s Benevolent Association met in Woodbridge today to discuss the state of local police departments in New Jersey.  Camden and Newark have seen massive layoffs in proportion to the size of their departments.  Small towns have also instituted layoffs as they are forced to deal with a two percent cap on property taxes.  Lawmakers are negotiating over how to trim back pension and benefit packages for public workers, as a result there has been a sixty percent spike in the number of public employees retiring between 2009 and 2010.
