New Trans-Hudson “Gateway” Rail Tunnel Project

By Marie DeNoia Aronsohn

A new Trans-Hudson rail tunnel project is advancing on the horizon, but this time Amtrak Railroad is at the helm.

Just a little over three months after Governor Chris Christie cancelled the Access to the Region’s Core or ARC Tunnel, U.S. Senators Frank Lautenberg and Bob Menendez announced a new approach to solving — what they call — New Jersey’s Transportation crisis.  The new proposal, dubbed The Gateway Tunnel Project, would build new rail tunnels, expand Penn Station, replace the 100 year old Portal Bridge over the Hackensack River, and expand intercity and high-speed rail access.
