Governor Christie’s administration has approved 23 new charter schools to open in the state by September, increasing by one-third the total number of charter schools in New Jersey. The governor pointed to students at the Robert Treat Academy, a blue ribbon school, as shining examples of the promise of charter schools. Like the majority of charter school students in New Jersey, they scored better in testing than their peers in traditional Newark public schools, according to newly released statistics.
