Ironbound Asthma Study

By Sara Lee Kessler
Asthma is on the rise among inner-city kids.  The rate of asthma in the Ironbound section of Newark, which has a population of roughly 55-thousand, is about one in four.  The New Jersey statewide rate is one in twelve.  A team of researchers at UMDNJ has won a 1.2 million dollar grant to study asthmatic Ironbound children over the next four years.

One Response to Ironbound Asthma Study

  1. It seems to me that we already know there is a connection between asthma, pollution and stress, so I do not understand why 1.2 million is being spent to monitor these children over a 4 year period. I feel the money would be better spent to clean up the environment, create new jobs and programs to end violence in the community and to heal the children that are already afflicted.
