Standardbred Racing & NJN to Receive Temporary State Subisidy

By Michael Aron

According to the Governor, the state loses over 20 million dollars a year subsidizing harness and thoroughbred racing at the Meadowlands Racetrack.  The Governor’s deal with the standardbred industry means the trotters will run again in January as the industry had hoped.  The agreement gives the industry three months starting in January to get a successful operation underway at the Meadowlands.   Governor Christie also signed legislation aimed at converting NJN into an independent, non-profit entity free of state subsidy.  NJN will continue operating while the new governing board looks for a non-profit company or an existing public broadcaster to manage a new entity.
