Judge Grants 10-Day Stay of Newark Firefighter & Police Layoffs

The original plan to layoff dozens of firefighters was avoided and a tentative agreement with the Newark Superior Officers Association has stopped planned demotions of approximately 100 high ranking police officers.  Over 100 police officers were scheduled for layoffs.  The city’s attorney says the layoffs would save about 42 million dollars.  Mayor Booker has said in the past that the layoffs were needed in light of the city’s fiscal crisis.
