The Access to the Region’s Core (ARC) Tunnel Project that would have created a rail tunnel under the Hudson River between New Jersey and New York City is not going to be saved by Amtrak. Rumors swirled that Amtrak would resurrect the project by incorporating it into their plan to build a high speed rail line along the Northeast Corridor. In addition, NJ Transit Executive Director Jim Weinstein received a letter from the US Department of Transportation Regional Administrators stating that the Transit is responsible for the 271 million dollars, with interest and penalties, it received from the federal government for the ARC project.
