Newark Board of Adjustment took up an application from Waste Management for a variance and site plan approval for a medical waste treatment facility in the Ironbound section of the city. State environmental officials said this would be the first commercial operation of this kind in the state because medical waste is currently treated on site at hospitals and other medical facilities. Residents are opposed due to more traffic from delivery trucks and possible exposure to other pollutants.
