8th Congressional District Debate: Pascrell v Straten

By Marie DeNoia Aronsohn
In New Jersey’s 8th Congressional District, which encompasses cities and towns in Passaic and Essex Counties, long-time incumbent Democrat Bill Pascrell is facing a challenge from businessman Republican Roland Straten. Pascrell’s base is thought to be firm in this traditionally Democratic district.  However, in an election cycle – that analysts believe is primed to favor Republicans,  Pascrell says he is not taking anything for granted. Straten had challenged Pascrell in 2008.  Pascrell won 71 percent of the vote in that election.  But, Straten says he’s convinced viewpoints have changed, and he has a better shot this time.
