ARC Tunnel Decision

By Zachary Fink
“We simply cannot afford it.” Those are the words spoken by Governor Christie who today cancelled the ARC project once and for all. The Governor had suspended work on ARC citing cost overruns that would potentially put New Jersey taxpayers on the hook for $4 billion beyond the $2.7 billion it had already committed. US Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood asked him to reconsider cancelling ARC (which stands for Access to the Region’s Core) but after another face to face meeting this past Sunday, LaHood and Christie could not reach a final accommodation. The feds did offer another $358 million, but Christie says that is not enough to justify moving forward.
