By Zachary Fink
Former New Jersey Attorney General and Gubernatorial Candidate Cary Edwards died this morning after a four year battle with cancer. Edwards was Governor Thomas Kean’s Chief Counsel during his first term, which began in 1982. He was sworn in as Attorney General on January 21, 1986, the day of Govenor Kean’s second inauguration. Edwards resigned that job to run for governor in 1989. He finished third in the primary. He ran again in 1993, losing a close primary race to Governor Christie Whitman. Edwards has been chairman of the State Commission of Investigation since November of 2004.  The Oakland resident is survived by his wife, two daughters and five grandchildren.
