Senator Rice Criticized Donation to the Newark School System

By Zachary Fink
State Senator Ron Rice (D-Newark ) criticized the $100 Facebook donation to the Newark school system. Rice conducted a hearing for the Legislature’s Joint Committee On the Public Schools to look into state control of local districts. Last month Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg agreed to donate $100 million to the Newark public school system. He made the announcement on the Oprah Winfrey Show with Newark Mayor Cory Booker and Governor Chris Christie. Rice criticized Booker and questioned his competency, since the gift is partially predicated on Booker having some say over how the money is spent. Newark schools remain under state control, which was also questioned by lawmakers. Acting Education Department Commissioner Rochelle Hendricks said the state plans to continue playing a role in Newark.
